Witness vehicle sought in Chilliwack, B.C., serious assault probe

Police in Chilliwack, B.C., are asking the public to help identify a potential witness in a serious assault investigation after two people were sent to hospital, including a minor who suffered life-threatening injuries.

The Chilliwack RCMP’s serious crimes unit says separate attacks occurred “within a short period of time and in close proximity to each other” on Wells Road on May 3.

Investigators have since obtained video reportedly showing a vehicle that was in the area at the time of at least one of the incidents. Police believe its occupants “may have seen or heard something significant and could provide critical information,” according to an RCMP news release Thursday.

The vehicle is described as a newer-model, mid-size grey SUV. According to police, it was seen travelling eastbound on Wells Road between 2 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on the morning of the assaults.

“During that time, the vehicle pulled over briefly just prior to the intersection of Vedder Road and Wells Road,” police said.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have been inside the SUV, or anyone with information about it, to contact investigators.

Officers were called to the 45000 block of Wells Road at around 2 a.m. and found an adult male victim, who was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to an earlier news release from the detachment.

“The second assault occurred shortly afterward in the same area,” the May 5 release said. “A youth victim was transported to hospital with life‑threatening injuries where they remain in serious condition.”

Police did not share the young person’s age or gender.

“It is alleged that both assaults involved the same suspects, however, the two victims are not known to one another,” the release said.
