The Vancouver Whitecaps are eyeing a new stadium at the PNE fairgrounds, the team has confirmed.

The MLS club has been in talks with the City of Vancouver about the possibility of a new home at the PNE, but so far, no further details have been shared with the public.

“The club’s ownership has always been clear on their goal of constructing a purpose-built stadium, and the importance of a suitable venue to both fan experience and financial performance for any professional sports franchise,” the Vancouver Whitecaps FC said Friday, in a statement.

“We look forward to continuing our constructive engagement with the city and appreciate the city’s continued support for Vancouver’s thriving soccer community.”

Talks between the city, the PNE and the club began earlier this year, CTV News has learned.

Currently, the Whitecaps lease the use of B.C. Place, which is owned and operated by the B.C. Pavilion Corporation, a provincial Crown corporation.

The multi-purpose venue, located in downtown Vancouver, has a capacity of 54,500.
