Nearly a year after a 90-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run on Vancouver Island, charges have been laid in the case.

Nanaimo RCMP provided an update Monday, saying Justin Nicholls, 26, has been charged with one count of failing to stop at an accident causing death.

The victim, Albertha Abma, was found on Feb. 24, 2024, lying on Cedar Road near the intersection of Bennie Road, according to Mounties.

“There were no witnesses to what had happened, and despite the valiant life-saving efforts of bystanders and first responders, the woman died at the scene,” a statement rom the detachment said.

“Following a lengthy investigation by the Nanaimo RCMP General Investigation Section, and with assistance from Ms. Abma’s community, a vehicle and the driver were identified.” Nicholls was arrested on Feb. 12 and has since been released from custody.

His next court appearance is set for April 8.
