Married health-care workers accused of stealing $1M from elderly patient in Newmarket, Ont.: York police

Two health-care workers allegedly stole an elderly Newmarket, Ont. patient’s banking information and withdrew nearly $1 million, and police say there could be more victims.

In a news release issued Friday, York Regional Police said the victim reported in August that a large amount of money had been withdrawn from her account without her knowledge.

Police launched an investigation and identified two suspects, one of whom was caring for the victim as a personal support worker.

It’s alleged the suspects illegally accessed the victim’s bank accounts and attended “various” financial institutions to make the withdrawals.

The suspects were identified by police as Richmond Hill residents Juvie, 38, and Lloyd, 37, Maputol.

The victim was in Juvie’s care prior to the alleged fraud, police told CTV News Toronto, adding that Lloyd works as a registered nurse in Newmarket.

Police also confirmed the suspects are married.

Juvie Maputol is facing charges including theft by person holding power of attorney, theft over $5,000, and misappropriation of money held under direction, as well as several other offences.

Lloyd Maputol is charged with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000, and laundering proceeds of crime.

“Investigators are releasing their photos as they believe there to be more victims,” police said in a statement.

The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), in a separate statement, said they were aware of the charges against Lloyd Maputol, who is an RN, and take the allegations seriously.

“CNO is committed to upholding the highest standards of practice and ensuring that the health care professionals we regulate adhere to ethical and professional standards,” the statement read.
