A snowfall warning and freezing drizzle advisory remain in effect for Saskatoon as the city digs out from a heavy snowfall.
The City of Saskatoon has declared a snow event after receiving 12 centimeters of snow on Thursday and Friday morning.
“Twenty-eight graders and six plows are working to clear snow from priority streets like freeways, arterial roads and collector streets,” the city said in a news release on Friday morning.
“Snow will be stored on medians, boulevards and parking lanes to maintain mobility. 14 sanders are working to improve traction in icy areas, and 6 sidewalk plows are active clearing city-owned pathways and sidewalks.”
As of 10 a.m. Friday, travel was not recommended on several highways and roads, including Highways 20, 5, 45, and 11, due to reduced visibility, ice, loose snow, swirling snow, and drifting snow.
Travel advisories were also in effect for North Battleford, the Prince Albert area, Meadow Lake, and La Ronge, as the Highway Hotline reported hazards due to icy conditions, snow drifting, and swirling snow.
In the snowfall warning issued early Friday morning, Environment Canada forecasts Saskatoon could get up to 20 centimeters of snow.
“Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” the weather agency said.
Environment Canada says freezing drizzle will continue through portions of southern Saskatchewan on Friday.
