Saskatoon man who spied on and recorded women at home apologizes at sentencing hearing

A Saskatoon man with a history of spying on women has pleaded guilty to the charges against him. Stacey Hein has the details.

A Saskatoon man who secretly watched and filmed women in their homes appeared at a sentencing hearing Monday, telling a judge he wants to “do better.”

Kyle Hameluck, 36, has pleaded guilty to 25 charges related to voyeurism. He has prior convictions for similar offences.

In 2017, Hameluck pleaded guilty to charges of voyeurism and indecent exposure. While on probation for those crimes, he reoffended. In 2020, he admitted to secretly photographing 25 women through their windows near the University of Saskatchewan while they were nude or undressing.

At his sentencing hearing, Hameluck stood up and apologized for his actions and the harm he caused. He told Justice Krista Zerr he is ready to address his behaviour and participate in programming.

Earlier in the hearing, Crown prosecutor Leslie Dunning read an agreed statement of facts into the record.

It detailed how Saskatoon police began surveilling Hameluck in March 2024 following complaints from women. Officers observed him in various neighbourhoods, peering into the windows of homes.

He was arrested at his home shortly afterward. Police seized his phone and other electronic devices. A search revealed videos and photos of women who were fully or partially nude. Some women were targeted more than once.

Dunning also read victim impact statements from five women, whose identities are protected by a publication ban.

“I am someone’s daughter, sister and friend,” one woman wrote.

“I wanted to throw up everything in my stomach so I could feel clean.”

She said she took scalding showers and scrubbed her skin raw in the weeks that followed, desperate to feel clean again.

Another woman wrote that she now feels as though someone is always watching her.

A common theme among the victims was feeling unsafe in their own homes.

The Crown and defence jointly recommended a sentence of just under three years. With credit for time spent in remand, Hameluck would have about seven months left to serve.

They also proposed conditions including a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew and mandatory participation in sexual offender programming.

Justice Zerr reserved her decision because the defence and Crown disagreed on whether Hameluck should be required to take addictions counselling and abstain from cannabis for a year.

Zerr is expected to deliver her decision Thursday morning.
