Man arrested in Saskatoon’s University Bridge crash released without charges

WATCH: A man arrested in connection with a crash on the University Bridge has been released from police custody without charges.

A 37-year-old man arrested in connection with a crash on the University Bridge Wednesday morning has been released from police custody without charges.

According to the Saskatoon Police Service, the man has since been admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Services Act.

He was originally arrested for dangerous driving, evading police, and impaired driving.

Police say officers were called around 8:45 a.m. for reports of a black car driving erratically, travelling in the wrong lanes, and not obeying traffic signals. A patrol officer attempted to stop the vehicle on 7th Avenue North, but it sped away.

The vehicle then collided with a truck on the University Bridge.

Sowgat Mahmud captured the crash on his rear dash cam.

Mahmud says he was driving home after dropping off his family at school and was crossing the bridge when, just after passing a white van, a black car slammed into it.

“I was shocked,” he said. “I never thought I was going to see an accident like that.”

He describes how the car was travelling in the wrong lane, leaving other drivers no time to react.

No serious injuries were reported.

Earlier that morning, a man was seen standing on the roof of a black car and blocking traffic in the Stonebridge area.

Police say the two incidents are connected.
