A public inquest into the 2022 in-custody death of 51-year-old Sidney Littlewolfe will take place next month.

Littlewolfe was found unresponsive in his cell on April 21, 2022, according to a news release from the province. He was pronounced dead after life-saving efforts were attempted by staff and EMS.

The inquest will be held on May 12 to 16 at the Travelodge, 106 Circle Drive West, in Saskatoon.

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is responsible for investigating all sudden, unexpected deaths. A coroner’s inquest is called anytime someone dies while in custody, unless the coroner is satisfied the death was entirely due to natural causes.

Coroner Timothy Hawryluk, K.C. will preside over the inquest, helping a jury of civilians to determine the cause and circumstances of Besic’s death.

The jury will also be able to offer recommendations to help prevent similar deaths in the future.
