Huskies headed to Mitchell Bowl after defeating Rams 25-24

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies will move on to the Mitchell Bowl following a nail-biting 25-24 performance against the University of Regina Rams.

A field goal from kicker Lukas Scott capped off a 16-point comeback effort in the fourth quarter during Saturday’s matchup at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.

“I’m really proud of this group,” Huskies head coach Scott Flory said in a news release. “[They are] a resilient group, been saying it all year. Super fun to coach, just never quit, never gave up.”

Saturday’s win marks the fourth time Flory has led the team to a Hardy Cup victory in his eight seasons with the program.

The win also represents payback for the Huskies, as the team was defeated by the Rams 19-14 in the 2024 Hardy Cup. The Rams would go on to be defeated by the Laval Rouge et Or in that year’s Mitchell Bowl.

A lone field goal from Scott were the only points scored during the first quarter of play. Scott would nail another through the uprights to put the Huskies up 6-0 to start off the second quarter.

However, Rams quarterback Owen Sieben connected with three different receivers to march the ball all the way to Saskatchewan’s end zone. A 32-yard pass to Rylan Sokul led to Sieben connecting with Kaleb Senz with a four-yard pass to put Regina up 7-6.

After a quick possession from the Huskies the Rams strung together an eight play, 63-yard drive which ended with a field goal from Ty Gorniak to extend Regina’s lead to 10-6.

The Rams’ defence stopped the Huskies in their tracks on the next possession, forcing a two-and-out. Under pressure, Sieben orchestrated another scoring drive, ending with a 10-yard touchdown pass to receiver Emmett Steadman.

During the last drive before halftime, Huskies quarterback Jake Farrell connected with four receivers to put Saskatchewan in position to make their third field goal of the game. The score was 17-9 going into the second half.

The third quarter saw a string of turnovers for both teams. Regina’s Brandon Wong would recover two fumbles, the second of which resulted in a 49-yard run into the Huskies’ end zone, putting the U of R up 24-9 going into the fourth quarter.

The Huskies offence found their rhythm early in the final frame. Farrell would connect with Daniel Wiebe, Tyrus Flory, and Ryker Frank for big gains. On Regina’s 20-yard line, Farrell would find Liam Piccinin in the end zone for the rookie’s first career touchdown, making the score 24-16.

The scoreboard did not change on the ensuing drive, but the Huskies gained the upper hand on the punt. Cameron Kaun managed to knock the ball free from Rams returner Kaleb Senz. It was recovered by Jacob Goldstone, setting the Huskies up on Regina’s 51-yard line.

The next play saw a pass to Mason Grabowski cut the Rams’ lead to just two points with 6:20 to go.

The Huskies defence would halt any progress by the Rams, with Regina giving up possession in just four plays.

With the clock winding down, the Huskies marched down the field. Frank would carry the ball for five straight plays. A penalty struck a potential touchdown off the board, but Scott would split the uprights to put the Huskies in the lead at 25-24 with just 20 seconds on the clock.

Despite their best efforts, the Rams could not capitalize, attempting a last second punt for a single which fell short, landing on the Huskies four-yard line where it was fielded by Scott at the Huskies four-yard line. With that, the game was over.

With the win, U of S will host the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Yates Cup champion Queen’s Gaels at home on Nov. 15, at 2:15 p.m.

Farrell was named most valuable player. The Saskatoon-born pivot completed all 25 of his pass attempts and threw for a season-high 356 yards and two touchdowns.
