Blue Jays playoff run sparks excitement in Saskatoon

WATCH: The Toronto Blue Jays are on a roll this postseason, and here in Saskatoon, the excitement is rising with every win.

As the Toronto Blue Jays push toward a spot in the American League Championship Series, fans in Saskatoon are feeling the excitement and rallying behind the team.

“They’ve had an incredible season. I honestly didn’t see it coming,” said Carmen Bochek.

“It’s been a great season. Nice to see everyone getting behind them,” said Barry Hickey.

“They’re doing fabulous,” said Tanya Cestnick.

The Blue Jays haven’t made it this far since 2016. But a grand slam from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on Sunday, the first in franchise postseason history, has fuelled momentum heading into the next round.

“It’s the best kind of baseball to watch. All the stuff we used to complain about, they’ve fixed it. It’s an amazing time to be a Jays fan,” said Jimmy Oneschuk.

That energy is clear at Olympian Sports, where Jays merchandise is in high demand. Jerseys for Bo Bichette and Guerrero Jr. are the top sellers.

“Huge upsell, specifically in jerseys. Lots of people that are coming in are going to the games,” said Paige Willey, an employee at the store.

At Sports on Tap, the playoff games are drawing more fans, coming out with hopes for a deep run.

“Anytime there’s something big like this, it brings out everybody. From the casual fan who just wants to see and be part of the action to the diehard. So, it’s a whole different atmosphere than a normal Jays game,” said Fred Chudskov, manager at Sports on Tap.

While this year’s team is making new memories, some fans are thinking back to the glory days of the early 1990s.

“I’m old enough to remember back in ’92 and ’93, and I actually got a photo with their two World Series trophies,” Hickey said.

If the Jays maintain their momentum, that memory may soon have a sequel.
