A Weyburn man has been arrested and charged after allegedly starting a large fire that destroyed a home in the community.

On March 5, officers with the Weyburn Police Service (WPS) responded to a house fire on the 100 block of 7th Street.

Officers were informed by a resident at the scene that someone was still inside the home – which was actively burning at the time.

Unable to wait for firefighters to arrive, WPS officers entered the home and pulled the remaining occupant from the structure – saving his life.

Investigators later discovered the man who officers rescued from the scene purposely started the fire while others were inside the home, police said.

WPS blocked traffic as fire crews took over the scene. The house was deemed a total loss.

As a result, Lee Storry of Weyburn, Sask. was charged with arson and endangering human life. Storry was also arrested on an outstanding impaired driving charge.

He was remanded into custody and is set to appear in provincial court in Weyburn.
