Sask. NDP continue to push for answers on Marshal investigation

The Opposition NDP wants to know why a member of the newly created Saskatchewan Marshals Service is being investigated by the province’s Public Complaints Commission.

Earlier this month, the government announced that a marshal had been placed on administrative leave, but did not identify the officer or the nature of the complaint during question period in the legislature on Monday.

The NDP opposition pushed for details.

“Saskatchewan people expect law enforcement officers to follow the law, and they expect transparency and accountability to the Minister of Justice, corrections, policing and public safety. What is the marshal accused of doing?” NDP MLA Nicole Sarauer asked.

In response, Minister of Justice Tim McLeod refused to speculate on the situation.

“[It would] certainly be inappropriate to be speculating or commenting on an ongoing investigation and I won’t do that on the floor of this house,” he said.

The province has said the Public Complaints Commission generally makes its findings public at the conclusion of investigations.
