Regina to host construction decarbonization conference in 2025

WATCH: BuildGreen Saskatchewan has announced a sustainability conference to be held later this year in Regina.

Regina will be hosting its first ever building decarbonization conference in 2025 – dubbed “Buildgreen Saskatchewan.”

The conference was the brainchild of both the Regina and Saskatoon chapters of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

The goal of the event is to bring government agencies, regulators, utility providers, designers, construction teams, First Nation communities, and building owners together to address more sustainable building practices.

“The closer we get to the energy sharing of natural ecosystems, the less energy waste there will be in the systems we build,” the organization said in its announcement.

Whether its heat domes, flooding, or drought conditions – infrastructure in Saskatchewan is facing mounting pressure from the environment.

Championing sustainable building practices and infrastructure is now crucial, according to the conference’s Chair Ayo Abiola.

“We’re working really for a sustainable world, and we work in the building sector, making sure that the build environment, the buildings that we work, play and live in, are built to the greatest standard and are also built to support our life, our work and everything we do,” he said.

The organization added that the province faces an additional challenge, as Saskatchewan boasts an energy emission factor of 660 grams CO2e/kwh compared to the national average of 100 g/kwh.

The conference is scheduled to go ahead in October.
