Regina Thunder roll to victory over Huskies, look to defend PFC championship against rival Hilltops in final

The Regina Thunder took the next step toward successfully defending their 2024 Prairie Football Conference championship, with a blowout win over Edmonton.

The Regina Thunder took the next step toward successfully defending their 2024 Prairie Football Conference championship, with a 49-10 blowout win over the Edmonton Huskies in the league semi-final.

“We had a couple touchdowns get called back and picks in the end zone, but the guys bounced back in the second half and that’s all it matters,” head coach Scott Macaulay told CTV News after the win.

The win sends the Thunder to their fifth-straight PFC championship since 2021 and will play the team they’ve played each time: their provincial rival Saskatoon Hilltops.

Regina came out on top in their last championship meeting last season.

“[Saskatoon] is [the] gold standard of the CFJL,” Macaulay said about their opponents. “The bottom line is [Tom Sargeant] always gets those guys ready to rock. All our games are always physical and it comes down really down to the wire.

“They know us as well as we know ourselves,” he added.

Led by Peter Boersh, Regina’s run game has been the foundation of their success this season.

Boersh ran for 1,300 yards during the regular season, earning himself a unanimous PFC All-Star team selection.

“I have all the help,” he said. “Our O-line is fantastic. We had three PFC All-Stars, could have been all five really. I’ve been gifted with a ton of opportunities and our team is just primed for opportunity for everybody. And luckily, I’ve been the one to get a lot of success.”

Regina and Saskatoon faced off two times during the 2025 season. They split the season series one win a piece.

Despite earning the number one seed in the conference this year, the Thunder have never won back-to-back PFC championships.

Macaulay feels this year’s team has the ability to rewrite the story of the franchise.

“The guys in the locker room are fully bought, they work hard and they’re really focused,” he said. “Guys put in extra time and effort in watching film and asking great questions and listening and buying into the schemes and it’s been great.”

The 2025 PFC Championship game is set for Oct. 26 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.
