Hundreds of collectors and sports enthusiasts came together for the annual Sportsworld Collectibles Sportsfest.

The show brought vendors from out of province to display some of their most valuable sports cards and memorabilia.

Kelvin Roemer serves as the promoter of the annual Regina fixture. He said the hobby of card collecting is catching on with a new generation.

“The kids are the future. There are a lot of adults, but we like to see the kids because they are the future of the hobby,” Roemer said.

A large portion of this year’s show was dedicated to Pokémon cards – a trend that’s currently experiencing a revival.

Joni Watanabe from Yakuza TCG said there is lots of money being exchanged within the collecting industry. For those just starting out, he advises just to enjoy it and have fun.

“A lot of people are into this and just collect what you like. Enjoy the hobby,” Watanabe explained.

Luke Quach is a platinum dealer through PSA. He works within the merchandise collection industry as an authentication agent.

Quach said fake merchandise is a real issue – which collectors should always be aware of.

“You got to make sure it’s good and legit. I have already had a couple people come by with some cards that were fake,” Quach said.

He advises everyone to do research on prices before buying anything if the deal is too good to be true.

Roemer said the event is one of a few planned for the year.

Interest in the hobby is certainly alive and well, as even before the event’s opening at the Hungarian Club – hopeful collectors were lined up to enter.
