‘Not warranted’: SGEU, NDP clash over comments on alleged Marshal misconduct

The Saskatchewan government and SGEU are responding after the NDP raised concerns about a former Saskatchewan Marshals Service member’s misconduct allegation.

The provincial government and the Saskatchewan Government & General Employees Union (SGEU) are upset over NDP comments surrounding a misconduct allegation from a former member of the Saskatchewan Marshals Service.

In 2025, the Saskatchewan NDP filed a Freedom of Information request looking for records related to the investigation and subsequent resignation of a Saskatchewan Marshal.

The Official Opposition spoke about the issue on Friday, accusing the government of not providing any information.

In a report last month, the province’s information and privacy commissioner urged for more government transparency, after it released limited and heavily redacted documents.

According to the NDP, just 28 of a total 290 pages of documents related to the matter were provided, the identity of the accused was redacted throughout.

The SGEU released a statement on Tuesday in support of the province’s position, saying in part that any allegations involving individual workers must be handled through appropriate processes through collective bargaining agreements and respect confidentiality.

“SGEU members do not deserve to have their privacy threatened,” the union’s statement read.

SGEU President Tracy Sauer had stronger words for the opposition.

“We represent our members and I think our main concern right now is the reputational damage that this is trying to cause for the Marshals, and it’s not fair and it’s not warranted,” Sauer told reporters.

“There’s other ways they can go about getting their information instead of slamming one worker, one individual multiple times in the press.”

The unidentified Marshal resigned from the service in the summer of 2025.

The establishment of the Saskatchewan Marshals Service was announced by the province in 2022.

The new law enforcement agency was planned to consist of 70 officers with the mandate to provide additional support to RCMP and municipal police services across the province.

The Marshals are headquartered in Prince Albert, with a satellite office located in North Battleford.
