Financial crimes up in 2025, Regina police say

The Regina Police Service (RPS) is reporting a 12 per cent rise in financial crimes between 2024 and 2025.

So far in 2025, there have been 983 reported fraud, counterfeit and identity theft incidents, compared to 878 incidents during the same time period in 2024, according to police.

Investigators are managing over 100 active fraud investigations, with reported financial losses totalling about $10 million this year to date.

The RPS is advising the public to be vigilant against fraud attempts by verifying the legitimacy of requests for payment or personal information, monitoring accounts regularly for unauthorized transactions, and reporting suspected fraud immediately to police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

According to the RPS, reports of online and telephone scams come in almost daily from those who have either been victims of fraud or who are reporting suspicious activity.

In another report, a Regina resident discovered his bank account had been compromised after ID was stolen from his vehicle, which resulted in months of unauthorized transactions.

Regina police also investigated a case of a suspect using fraudulent ID to cash counterfeit cheques at multiple business locations.

Another notable investigation was an internal fraud incident involving an employee at a local business who withdrew money from company accounts. A total of $248,000 was misappropriated, and a 36-year-old woman was charged with theft and fraud.

Police say they have been working to hold offenders accountable in dozens of other cases affecting individuals and businesses, including money laundering activity connected to a local automatic business.
