What’s playing this weekend: Dec. 12-14

Matt Demers takes us through this week's new film releases including a feel-good comedy about a young woman juggling her family and work life.

From endearing, to tense, to downright scary, there might be a movie for everyone opening in theatres this weekend.

Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood joined CTV Your Morning Ottawa to share some insight on three new releases you can catch on the big screen this weekend.

Ella McCay (Rated PG-13)

Emma Mackey stars as the titular Ella McCay in this new movie from writer-director James L. Brooks.

“She’s an idealist, she’s 34 years old, she’s a mom and now she’s the governor,” Mr. Hollywood said.

The film reviewer says this film features a great cast and is a charming pick fit for the holidays.

“It’s a bit of a throwback almost to like those early 2000s-character dramedies. Movies you don’t get all the time,” Mr. Hollywood said.

“I think everyone’s having fun here. It’s a real uplifter.”

The film stars Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis and Woody Harrelson.

Not Without Hope (Rated R)

Mr. Hollywood says he highly recommend this harrowing film based on a true story.

“Four friends face the ultimate disaster when their fishing boat capsizes in the Gulf of Mexico,” Mr. Hollywood said.

“Edge of your seats. It’s a survival film through and through.”

The film is directed by Joe Carnahan and stars Zacahry Levi, Josh Duhamel, and Quentin Plair.

Silent Night, Deadly Night (TV-MA)

While this film is about Santa, it’s certainly not fit for the whole family.

“Don’t worry kids, that’s not the real Santa here,” Mr. Hollywood said.

“He’s a bit of a murderous Santa who’s up to definitely some not so good things.”

The film is a remake of 1984 movie, and while it might not be for those who are squeamish, Mr. Hollywood says its perfect for those who like a bit of horror mixed in with their holidays.

“The 1984 film was a little more campy, this one not so much,” Mr. Hollywood said. “They take it to the extreme, let me just say that. So, they do not shy away from the gore and the blood.”

The film is written and directed by Mike P. Nelson and stars Rohan Campbell, Ruby Modine and David Lawrence Brown.

Scary Christmas flicks

For those looking for a scary holiday movie to watch from the comfort of their home, Mr. Hollywood suggests the following:
