What’s playing this weekend: A new classic for the whole family, a gritty take on a timeless tale and a devastating horror-romance

We're checking out this week's new movies in theatres and at home with Matt Demers, Mr. Hollywood, including a new classic kids movie.

Mr. Hollywood joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to share his thoughts on three recently released movies playing in theatres this weekend, including a new family classic, a gritty reimagining of a well-known tale and a devastating horror-romance.

Toy Story 5 (Rated PG)

Mr. Hollywood says this latest film in the long-running animated franchise is as timely as it gets.

“It’s talking about the toys entering the tech world, where all the kids have kind of given up playing with toys, they’re playing with their screens,” Demers said.

“Once again, it’s got the heart, it’s got the humour and it’s wrapping that screentime age lesson in. It’s another charming romp with those oh-so-lovable characters.”

The film features familiar voice acting talents Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack. It was directed by McKenna Harris and Andrew Stanton.

The Death of Robin Hood (Rated R)

This film brings a familiar hero back to the screen, but takes things in a bleak new direction, Mr. Hollywood said.

“You know Robin Hood — this is him at the end of his life and it is very visceral and brutal and gritty at the beginning but then it turns into this meditative, almost a therapy session for Robin Hood,” Demers said.

“I enjoyed this. It’s not going to be for everybody — a specific style, that’s very dark and gritty — but yeah great stuff, especially by Hugh Jackman.”

Jackman stars in the titular role, alongside Jodie Comer and Bill Skarsgård. The film was written and directed by Michael Sarnoski.

Leviticus (Rated R)

“Leviticus” is an indie-horror-romance that Mr. Hollywood called “emotionally devastating at times.”

“It’s got a great, unique way of telling that story,” Demers said.

“There’s this queer romance, and boy oh boy will it have you on the edge of your seat here. Inventive twists and a new great addition to the indie-horror drama.”

The film stars Joe Bird, Stacy Clausen and Jeremy Blewitt. It was written and directed by Adrian Chiarella.
