This is the number one factor in fatal crashes on eastern Ontario roads

Speeding and distracted driving were the top factors in fatal crashes on highways across eastern Ontario in 2024.

Ontario Provincial Police says 81 people were killed in 72 fatal collisions on OPP-patrolled roads and highways across the region last year. So far in 2025, 13 people have been killed in crashes on OPP-patrolled roads across eastern Ontario.

Police are now calling on all drivers to be “part of the change” that makes roads and highways safer.

“This is why we are out on the highways looking for those who deliberately choose to drive at dangerously high speeds,” Chief Superintendent Lisa Wilhelm, OPP East Region Commander, said in a statement.

“When we say, ‘slow down’, it’s about preventing tragedies. It’s about ensuring moms, dads, sons, daughters, friends and loved ones all get safely to their destinations.”

Police say speeding was a factor in 26 fatal crashes on OPP-patrolled roads in eastern Ontario last year, while inattentive/distracted driving was a factor in 16 fatal crashes. Alcohol and drugs was the factor in 12 fatal crashes, while no seatbelt was a factor in 10 crashes.

“We urge everyone who gets behind the wheel of a vehicle, to think about what it would mean if you never came home again,” police said. “Slow down, never drive impaired, keep your eyes on the road ahead - not your phone, and always fasten your seatbelt. If you ride a motorcycle, the same message applies, but swap helmet for seatbelt.”
