SIU investigating after man suffers life-threatening injuries while fleeing from police in Ottawa’s ByWard Market

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after an individual suffered serious injuries while fleeing from the police in the ByWard Market early Saturday morning.

According to a statement from Ottawa police, officers responded to a call from a commercial business in the ByWard Market reporting an “unknown person who had entered the premises” shortly before 3:30 a.m.

Police say the individual fled the scene and sustained a serious injury while doing so.

Ottawa paramedics told CTV News they were called to the intersection of York Street and ByWard Market Square, where they found a man in his 30s lying prone near a parking garage.

Paramedics say the man’s injuries were life-threatening and they transported him to the Ottawa Hospital trauma centre.

The SIU investigates police interactions that may have resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm and/or sexual assault.
