Firefighters battle 2 kitchen fires in Ottawa on Thursday

Two adults and a child have been displaced by a fire at a home in Ottawa’s Greenboro neighbourhood.

The Ottawa Fire Services says it received a 9-1-1 call just after 8:30 p.m. Thursday, reporting a fire on the stove in a townhome on Silverlace Private, off Lorry Greenberg Drive.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, there was black smoke and flames visible from the home.

“Firefighters initiated a fast attack and advanced a hose line inside the structure,” Ottawa fire said.

“Firefighters had to spray water on the ceiling as they made their way to the kitchen area due to high level of heat while trying to make it to the area of origin. The fire was located in the kitchen and the flames had spread to the cabinets above the stove.”

Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Nick DeFazio says firefighters were “backed out of the structure” due to the heat, battling the fire from the outside of the home.

“Firefighters were eventually able to re-enter the structure and the fire was brought under control at 9:25 p.m.”

All three occupants of the home safely evacuated.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.

It was the second kitchen fire responded to by firefighters on Thursday.

Ottawa fire says the occupant of a basement fire inside a single-family home on Prince Albert Street called 9-1-1 just after 7 a.m., reporting smoke and flames in the kitchen.

“Firefighters arrived on scene three minutes after being dispatched to the call and confirmed smoke coming from the front of the single-family home that was converted into multiple apartments,” fire officials said.

“Firefighters initiated a fast attack and advanced a hose line to the basement.”

The fire was contained to the kitchen of the home.

The three people living in the home safely evacuated.

A cat living in the home was located by firefighters inside the home and brought outside to the owner.
