Driver charged with having improper tires after crash on Hwy. 401 in Kingston, Ont.

Ontario Provincial Police say a driver has been charged after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Kingston on Tuesday.

The crash happened at 8:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway near Sydenham Road. Police say Kingston firefighters extricated one person from one of the vehicles, who was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene, police said.

One driver, a 25-year-old woman from Napanee, is charged with having improper tires.

“In this case, the tires were virtually bald,” said OPP spokesperson Bill Dickson in a post on X.

“All motorists are reminded that having proper winter tires is essential to safe driving. While winter tires are not mandatory, the Highway Traffic Act and related regulations prohibit driving with improper tires, which includes those with worn treads below the legal limit, exposed cords, or significant cuts, bulges, or knots. The minimum tread depth for most passenger vehicles is 1.5 millimetres.”
