Snowstorm warning for Sudbury, North Bay

Published:

Sudbury, North Bay and the Sault can expect freezing rain and a major snowstorm this weekend, Environment Canada warns.

Ice pellets and snow accumulations up to 20 cm are expected in North Bay and Sudbury beginning Friday, Environment Canada says.

A winter storm warning is in effect for both areas, extending into Saturday when the weather is expected to clear.

“Risk of freezing rain. Difficult travel conditions and possible road closures,” the warning said.

“Snow is expected to begin affecting northeastern Ontario during the day before intensifying late in the day or this evening. The snow will likely become mixed with or change to ice pellets for portions of the region which would reduce snowfall amounts. There is also a threat of freezing rain. Snow will taper off by Saturday morning.”

A break Saturday will give way to another significant snow event expected Sunday.

“Threat of significant snowfall, freezing rain and ice pellets,” Environment Canada said.

“Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”
