Northwestern Ont. police report increase in bear sightings

As the weather warms, hungry bears are coming out of the wilderness and into residential areas, leading to more sightings and encounters with humans, Ontario Provincial Police say.

“The OPP Kenora detachment has received an increase in calls regarding bears entering yards, approaching homes and roaming residential properties,” police said in a news release May 12.

“Residents are encouraged to take steps to reduce attractants and prevent unwanted bear encounters.”

Those steps include keeping all doors and ground‑level windows closed and locked, especially during evening and overnight hours.

“Store garbage securely and avoid placing bins outside if they contain food scraps,” police said.

“Place garbage out only on collection day, not the night before. Remove bird feeders during bear season, as seeds and suet attract wildlife. Do not leave pet food outdoors.”

Remove grease and food from barbecues and keep compost in a secure, bear‑resistant container.

“If a bear is encountered, residents are advised to remain calm, keep a safe distance and never approach the animal,” police said.
