Northern Ont. arson suspect arrested with 12-gauge shotgun, meth

A suspect from Timmins has been charged with arson, weapons and drug trafficking offences in connection with a vehicle fire.

A 34-year-old from Timmins is facing weapons, drug trafficking and other charges in an investigation that began with a burning vehicle.

Ontario Provincial Police in Kirkland Lake responded at 5:30 a.m. to a vehicle fire at a residence on Prince Street. There were no injuries.

The suspect in the vehicle fire was apprehended Jan. 22 at 10:56 a.m. on Mountjoy Street in Timmins, with help from Timmins Police Service.

“The OPP seized a suspected amount of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of approximately $5,500 and a 12-gauge shotgun,” police said in a news release Wednesday.

Arson, other charges

The Timmins suspect is facing numerous charges, including arson with a disregard for human life, driving while prohibited, possession of an explosive and six counts of possessing a firearm or ammunition while prohibited, possessing a firearm with a serial number that has been tampered with and drug trafficking.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Timmins on Feb. 3.

“The investigation is ongoing,” police said.

“Further details will be released as they become available.”
