When you know, you know

Bruce Oake was 20 when he met 15-year-old Geneva at a corner store in Newfoundland in 1966, which is where young people would hang out in their small community.

Bruce says he knew then he would marry her one day, but Geneva said she wasn't so sure.

Three years later, they got engaged and moved to Sudbury.

Now, they have three children and four grandchildren.

Bruce and Geneva are celebrating their 55th anniversary in September and said they are still madly in love.

Out of the friend zone

Roni and Andrew Clarke have been together almost 40 years after meeting at a spelling bee at a local fair.

Roni was 12 when she met her husband, Andrew, and she said she knew right away he was going to be her best friend.

After spending six years in the friend zone, he finally asked her out.

They will celebrate their 37th wedding anniversary in June.

"I thought that I knew what love was ... but I have learned that it's not chocolate or sparkling things," Roni said.

"It's sitting with you when you feel like the world has come to an end. It's caring for you when you can't do it for yourself. It's learning about the things your partner is interested in. It's trust. It's letting go, when you so desperately want to hang on."

Right under your nose

Marie Goddard and her wife Sarah Lashbrook of Sudbury officially met through friends at a bar in 2002, but they found out later that Sarah was at Marie's high school graduation in 1994.

Sarah was there as a guest of a classmate, but inadvertently filmed Marie getting her diploma, too, even though the two graduates weren't on stage back to back.

Goddard said they were the first queer couple to get married on Manitoulin Island by a United church minister in 2006.

They adopted two special needs kids together and this year, Sarah is celebrating five years being cancer free.

"Through sickness and health," Goddard said. "It's been a journey.

When one door closes

Stephanie Turpin had her heart broken in 2006 when her boyfriend left her for another woman.

A little while later, she started dating a guy she met at a party -- only to find out his ex was dating her ex.

Loving yourself

Famous drag queen RuPaul often says "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?"

And self love is the theme of a poem written by Caeceila Trahan of Sault Ste. Marie:

One day she loved herself.

One day she loved herself,

Better than anyone else could.

One day she loved herself so much,

She shared it with others.

One day they learned to love themselves too.
