Helping families understand and cope with substance addiction

A Greater Sudbury-area program is aiming to again help family members of people battling addiction cope as their loved ones struggle.

Health Sciences North Mental Health and Addictions Centre offers a group to support people who are affected by a loved one’s substance use or addiction.

The Families Care Group offers 10 weekly sessions in person or virtually focusing on understanding substance use and the effects on themselves as well as others.

“This is a really important treatment group,” said Ashley May, HSN registered social worker.

“We understand that families are often on the frontlines helping their loved one and are unsure how to navigate ... How do I support my loved one who may have a substance use problem? So we try to reach families and support them along this journey, too.”

Officials said the program offers coping strategies, including setting boundaries, managing emotions, assertive communication and how to effectively support loved ones in their recovery.

“We do recognize that folks are very heavily impacted by substance use,” May said.

“It has a ripple effect not just on the person struggling with substance use, but their families. And so by learning how to take care of one’s self first, then maybe they will have more energy and resources to then better support their loved ones struggling with their own substance abuse.”

New sessions are set to start with a Families Care Welcome Group set for Jan. 30 at 1:30 p.m. at 127 Cedar St. Participants are required to register by calling 705-523-4988, ext. 4211.
