Flooding closes Highway 64, other West Nipissing area roads

A section of Highway 64 is fully closed in both directions in the northern Ontario community of Field in West Nipissing due to flooding.

The closure affects all lanes of the highway between Highway 539 and Lac Clair Road.

“Commercial motor vehicles are advised to detour using Highway 11,” Ontario Provincial Police said in a social media post early Saturday afternoon.

Ontario 511 also confirmed the full closure of all lanes of Highway 64 in Field.

Closures expand in West Nipissing

In an update shortly after 4:30 p.m. OPP advised additional roads have been closed in the Municipality of West Nipissing due to flooding:

• Leduc Road closed between Highway 539 and Highway 575 in Field
• Ashburton Road closed from Larocque to dead end in Field
• Kipling West Road closure extended from 124 to Point Road in Kipling
• Coyote Ridge Road closed from Shoreline Road to dead end in Crystal Falls

Safety tips for drivers

The OPP reminded motorists of the following safety tips when navigating flooded roadways:

• Avoid flooded roads and areas as much as possible.
• Drive with caution and remain alert for standing water, debris and damaged road surfaces.
• Never attempt to drive through roads that are completely flooded or washed out as the roadway underneath may be unstable or completely gone.
• Speeding can result in a sudden loss of control and serious collisions when ponding is encountered unexpectedly.
• Do not drive on closed or barricaded roadways. Driving on a closed road can be extremely dangerous and against the law.

“Motorists are urged to plan accordingly and adjust travel as needed to remain safe,” said police.
