Two teens arrested for allegedly targeting and scamming seniors in Montreal and Sherbrooke

Montreal police (SPVM) arrested two teens, suspected of operating a fraud scheme targeting seniors.

The suspects, aged 18 and 19, are alleged to have operated in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Montreal North boroughs, in addition to Sherbrooke.

The two men were released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

The SPVM said it was not sharing the main points of the alleged scheme for prevention purposes.

“The suspects allegedly targeted addresses where seniors lived in order to break in and steal their bank cards,” the SPVM said in a news release. “Following the theft, the suspects allegedly called the victims, posing as police officers or representatives of financial institutions, to confirm the address and PIN of the stolen cards. Once the information was confirmed, they allegedly made withdrawals at various banking institutions.”

Police remind citizens to be vigilant and not share PIN numbers or banking information, particularly over the phone.

“Never trust what is written on your phone’s display, as fraudsters use applications that allow them to write the names of financial institutions,” the SPVM said. “Respond to the person soliciting you by saying that you will call them back.”

In addition, police advise the following:

• Never give in to pressure.
• Always consult a family member or trusted friend to verify the information you have received.
• If in doubt, don’t hesitate to contact your financial institution yourself—in person or by calling an official number—or your local police station.
• In case of emergency, call 911.
