Pickpockets go on phone theft spree at Igloofest

Published:

More than 20 phone thefts were reported to Montreal Police (SPVM) during the first weekend of Igloofest.

The music was loud, the crowd was massive, and the energy was contagious — but amid all the excitement at Igloofest, thieves were busy at work.

Noémie Aubin learned this the hard way when her brand-new phone was stolen Friday.

“I had just gotten a new iPhone 16 on Wednesday,” said the festival-goer. “I was able to enjoy it for a mere 48 hours before it got stolen.”

Aubin isn’t alone. More than 20 phone thefts were reported to Montreal Police (SPVM) during the first weekend of Igloofest.

However, police at Station 21 said the actual number may be even higher since “some thefts may have been reported to other stations,” they told CTV News.

Open-air events and crowded venues like the winter festival in the Old Port are prime targets for pickpockets, who take advantage of brief moments of inattention to swipe phones, according to the SPVM.

The bulky winter clothing worn during the event only makes it easier for thieves to go unnoticed, said Aubin.

“I remember putting my phone in my pocket. It’s a pretty deep pocket, but with the heavy jacket I was wearing, you can’t really feel someone’s hands going through the motions,” she explained.

Igloofest organizers acknowledge the issue. In a statement to CTV News, they said their “on-site teams are vigilant and take this very seriously, but these thefts happen quickly and discreetly.” They added that they are working with Montreal police to increase security at the event.

The SPVM noted these types of thefts are becoming more common.

Despite being without a phone for the time being, Aubin isn’t letting the theft ruin her plans. She’s heading back to Igloofest next Thursday.

“I’m not going to stop myself from going back and enjoying myself, but I’ll definitely be more vigilant,” she said.

Igloofest organizers are reassuring attendees that the event remains safe and are encouraging people to enjoy the festivities. The event runs every weekend until February 10th.

If you’re planning to attend, make sure to keep a close eye on your belongings to avoid falling victim to theft.
