A Montreal man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his mother whose body was found on Thursday.
Tyrell Rytar, 21, appeared in court Friday to face the charge.
According to police, a 911 call was made at around 11:30 a.m. Thursday for a wellness check at a home on Turley Street, near Thierry Street.
Once officers arrived, they found a 42-year-old woman’s body with marks of violence.
The charge sheet identified the victim as Lisa Marie Rytar. It said she was killed on or about Jan. 21.
Her death marks Montreal’s first homicide of 2025 and the news came as a shock to people in the neighbourhood.
“I’ve been living here for 15 years and could not see anything happening [like this]. So this is really tragic,” one resident told CTV News on Friday.
The victim was a single mother described by her friends on social media as a kind soul with a difficult past.
One neighbour said police intervened in the past over disputes inside the home.
After a brief court appearance Friday, the accused was told to return to court on Feb. 25.
