Longueuil police say the deaths of a couple in their 70s on Montreal’s South Shore on Thursday was likely a murder-suicide.

Police were called “to assist a person” at a home on Champagne Street at around 8:45 a.m. Once officers arrived, they found the bodies of a 71-year-old woman and a 73-year-old man.

Neighbours on the street say they were shocked after hearing about the grisly discovery.

Police said the couple lived together in the home and had initially described their deaths as suspicious, but in an update on Friday they said the case involved a femicide.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” Longueuil police said on social media on Friday.
