A cyclist who was struck by an STM bus in Montreal’s Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood Monday morning has died.
According to police, several 911 calls were made about the collision near the intersection of Pie IX Boulevard and Lafontaine Street at around 11:30 a.m.
When officers arrived, they found the cyclist — an 89-year-old man — unconscious on the ground. Paramedics were also called to the scene and performed resuscitation maneuvers on him before he was sent to hospital in serious condition.
He died in hospital Monday night.
Véronique Dubuc, a police spokesperson, told CTV News that the bus was heading south on Pie IX when it reached the intersection of Lafontaine and struck the cyclist, who was crossing the street heading west.
Investigators spoke to witnesses who said the man may have crossed Pie IX Boulevard on a red light.
Police were waiting for an update on the cyclist’s condition as the investigation continues. Some streets in the area are closed to allow investigators to analyze the scene.
