Firefighters have recovered a body inside an apartment building that caught on fire in Montreal’s Saint-Henri neighbourhood Tuesday evening.

Police and fire crews responded at around 5:50 p.m. to a 911 call about a fire at a two-storey building on Saint-Antoine Street West between Saint-Philippe and Saint-Ferdinand streets.

A man was found unconscious inside and was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant.

An autopsy will be done to identify the victim and to determine the cause of death.

The building was evacuated and no other injuries were reported.

Since there was a fatality, the Montreal police arson squad is investigating the fire.

Police say the building sustained significant damage, but have determined that the fire was accidentally set.
