Vimy veterans branch set up table to explain importance of poppies

Members of the Veterans of Vimy Branch #145 are doing their best to not only raise money for veterans but to also explain to the public why the poppy is so important.

With the 2025 poppy campaign underway, they set up inside Covent Garden Market on Saturday.

“It gives us a chance to explain to the public why poppies and the funds that they raise are so important,” said Bruce Stock, a member of Vimy Branch #145. “They help them in so many different ways. We end up purchasing things from hospital equipment to supporting army cadets to helping veterans who have difficulties medically or with rent or food.”

They also help with purchasing service dogs.

“They are one of the more expensive causes,” said Stock. “They are becoming more and more common and more and more valuable, but they’re a very expensive item. Not only do you have to purchase the animal, but you have training.”

One of the other main aspects of having veterans on site is explaining the importance of the poppy.

“Friday was a good example,” said Dan Gass, a member of Vimy Branch #145. “We had three young ladies come in and asked us what this was about. They had no idea that we were here remembering veterans. We had to educate them about what Remembrance Day is about and they really appreciate it,” he explained.

Gass, who was a vice principal, believes as Canada continues to lose veterans each year, it’s important to carry on their legacy.

“We’re getting a lot of immigrants coming from other countries and they need to be educated as to why this is important to us,” he said.

The poppy campaign has a simple goal. “We want to make money so that we can help veterans,” said Gass.

“Every year, the Royal Canadian Legion conducts the Poppy Campaign, along with thousands of our members who volunteer from coast to coast to coast, to raise funds in support of Veterans and their families. Poppies are distributed freely, but your generous donations are invaluable and welcome,” according to the Legion’s website.
