Strong winds, heavy rain, risk of thunderstorms expected across southwestern Ontario tonight

The clouds are starting to thicken and we have some heavy rainfall on the way, according to CTV News meteorologist Julie Atchison.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement stretching from Windsor through London east to Toronto, warning of the potential of some heavy rainfall and some strong gusty winds.

“An area of low pressure will invade tonight with the rain. It’s already started to make the move into lower Michigan. This rain shield arriving to southern Ontario, this low pressure system will push rainfall amounts in parts of midwestern western Ontario, upwards of 60 to 75 millimeters,” said Atchison.

Lots of moisture is associated with this system coming in, and thunderstorms expected north of London.

Atchison went on to say, “Areas like Huron County, you could see copious amounts of rainfall and as well southern Bruce County into Gray. That’s where we’re going to see the heaviest amounts of rain pushed through.”

Storm are expected to continue overnight as we head into Thursday, mainly cloudy, still about a 40 per dent chance of showers, but the main rain will move through the area tonight through the overnight and ending by tomorrow morning.

“We’ll be back into some clearing by Thursday evening and a bit of sunshine as we head into Friday, but still unsettled,” said Atchison. “The weekend’s looking good. A mix of something cloud both Saturday and Sunday.”
