‘Stream banks may be slippery and unstable’: Rains and warmer temperatures have conservation authorities issuing a warning

Local conservation authorities are issuing a warning as rain and warmer temperatures impact waterways.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) expects warmer temperatures, and rain will melt some of the snowpack and raise water levels.

“A low-pressure system has entered the region and is forecast to remain throughout the week, bringing with it 20 to 30 millimetres of rain and daytime temperatures above freezing,” the UTRCA said in a statement.

“The snowpack across the Upper Thames River watershed contains approximately 75 millimetres of water, on average, according to the UTRCA’s snow survey on Feb. 2.”

Officials remind everyone to use extra caution and avoid waterways and flooded areas.

The conservation authority expects flows will remain elevated into next week.

They stress that the water is very cold and fast-moving and caregivers should keep children and pets away from watercourses.

“Stream banks may be slippery and unstable, ice cover will be weakened and unstable, and the water is very cold and fast-moving. Ice on flood control reservoirs is especially hazardous due to fluctuating water levels,” the conservation authority said.

They’re also issuing a warning to those who shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas.
