St. Thomas woman charged after police find impaired driver with child in vehicle

A 33‑year‑old St. Thomas woman has been charged after police say they found her allegedly impaired behind the wheel of a vehicle with a child inside.

Police were called Monday afternoon to the area of William Street after a report of a vehicle stopped in the roadway. The caller told police the driver appeared to be sleeping and that a child was inside the car.

Officers located the vehicle and say the driver showed signs of impairment, including slurred speech, and was unable to follow directions.

The woman was arrested for impaired operation and taken to police headquarters, where breath samples registered 310 and 300 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — nearly four times the legal limit.

Police said the child was safely released into the care of a family member who attended the scene.

The woman is charged with operation while impaired and operation while impaired — 80 plus.
