‘Significant loss’ in Wellington County chicken barn fire

A passerby alerted fire crews to a large chicken barn fire near Moorefield this morning.

More than 40 firefighters from Wellington and Perth Counties converged on the fire on Concession 8, near Sideroad 6, around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

They found smoke billowing out of the large barn but were able to contain the fire in a little over an hour.

Minto-Mapleton-Wellington North Deputy Fire Chief Callise Loos said the barn is considered “a significant loss,” although no specific dollar figure has been attached to the blaze as of yet.

Loos said the fire is not considered suspicious, although they aren’t sure exactly what started it.
