The Ottawa Police Service is conducting an investigation involving an off-duty London Police Service officer over something that occurred this past weekend.
London Police Chief Thai Truong has also launched an internal investigation into the matter.
The London officer has been suspended with pay during the course of the investigation, under section 209 of the Community Safety and Policing Act.
Statement from Chief Thai Truong
As Chief of Police, it is my responsibility to ensure that all members of the London Police Service (LPS) comply with applicable legislation, adhere to LPS procedure, and uphold the highest standards of professionalism at all times. Where allegations of misconduct arise, it is my duty to ensure they are addressed appropriately. The Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA) provides the Chief with the authority to investigate misconduct and sets out the disciplinary framework for holding officers accountable in cases where an allegation is substantiated through investigation.
I first learned of this matter after being notified by the Ottawa Police Service of their criminal investigation. In response, I directed that an internal investigation be conducted to assess compliance with the LPS Service Code of Conduct and with the CSPA Code of Conduct for Police Officers. However, this process cannot begin until the conclusion of the Ottawa Police Service investigation or, in the event a charge is laid, until the conclusion of court proceedings.
I acknowledge the community’s legitimate interest in this matter and remain committed to transparency within the limits of relevant legislation. Out of necessity with respect to the integrity of the ongoing investigation and the need to ensure due process, I am unable to provide further details at this time.
