Chilly winds, risk of flurries and freezing drizzle in London area today

A polar air mass continues to dominate the Great Lakes region, bringing cold, windy conditions and a mix of winter weather to southwestern Ontario.

Flurries, ice pellets and occasional freezing drizzle were reported over the past 24 hours, creating difficult travel conditions during the morning commute. Temperatures dipped to minus 10.4 C early Wednesday before rebounding slightly.

Environment Canada forecasts a daytime high of plus 1 C this afternoon, still several degrees below seasonal norms. Winds will remain strong through the day, making it feel colder than the air temperature.

Snowfall amounts over the next 24 hours are expected to be light — generally one to two centimetres — before transitioning to a rain‑snow mix and possible freezing drizzle late Wednesday night into Thursday.

Forecasters say winds will ease over the next day, helping improve wind chill values. However, unstable conditions remain ahead, with periods of snow, rain and icy precipitation possible through Thursday afternoon.

The cold air mass stretches well into the southern United States, with temperatures running several degrees below average as far south as Louisiana.

Stronger winds are expected along the eastern shores of Lake Huron tonight, with gusts reaching 50 to 60 km/h.

Long‑range forecasts suggest a gradual shift to milder air by the weekend as the jet stream moves north.

Early next week could bring more sunshine and quieter conditions, though intermittent unsettled weather is still possible.
