Two people arrested after agreeing to sell stolen climbing equipment to Guelph police officer

Two people have a new appreciation for the phrase ‘seller beware’ after they unknowingly tried to sell stolen goods to a Guelph Police Service officer.

Police received a call from a Guelph man on Sunday. He told them his vehicle had been parked at a Woolwich Street address when someone went through his belongings and took approximately $1,300 worth of climbing equipment. The equipment was listed for sale online the next day.

A police officer reached out to the seller and arranged to meet up on Thursday morning and buy the gear for $400. The seller told the officer his girlfriend would be at the meeting.

Officers met up with the woman on Thursday just after 9 a.m., and arrested her. Her boyfriend was found nearby and also arrested. The climbing equipment was returned to the victim.

A 38-year-old Guelph man and 27-year-old Guelph woman have both been charged with possessing stolen property under $5,000. The man was also charged with breaching a probation order.
