Six young rabbits rescued after being abandoned outdoors in Rockwood

The Guelph Humane Society says six rabbits were found abandoned behind a grocery store in Rockwood.

Six young domestic rabbits are receiving care after being found abandoned behind a grocery store in Rockwood.

The Guelph Humane Society said the rabbits were discovered around 6:40 p.m. on Friday behind a Foodland on Alma Street.

An animal services officer responded after a member of the public reported finding the animals.

The rabbits, described as juvenile lionhead rabbits, are believed ti be between four and seven months old. Officials said there in a “neglected condition” and will require veterinary care.

“It is unfortunate domestic rabbits are often mistaken to have the same survival instincts as their wild counterparts,” said Katherine Leonard, senior manager of community services with the humane society. “If these young ones were left where they were found, they would have succumbed to disease or predators. We are grateful to the kind member of the public who reached out to ensure they could get access to the care they need.”

The Guelph Humane Society is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Provincial Animal Welfare Service.
