Police warn of attempted distraction thefts in Guelph

Guelph Police are investigating a series of attempted distraction thefts across the city.

On Sunday, between 11 a.m. and 12:35 p.m., residents in multiple neighbourhoods — including Kathleen Street, Maple Street, Forest Street and Rickson Avenue — were reportedly approached by individuals in a vehicle asking for directions.

Investigators said the suspects attempted to engage victims in conversation while also trying to make physical contact.

In each case, the vehicle was described as a black SUV with a male was behind the wheel. There were also two females inside, one sat in the passenger’s seat and the other was in the back. All three were described as having brown skin, with one female wearing a colourful scarf.

Police said no property was stolen and at least two complainants recognized the individuals from previous encounters.

“Police services across Ontario have seen an increase in these distraction-type theft attempts,” police explained in a media release. “Typically, older adults are approached by individuals in a vehicle and engaged in conversation, during which a female passenger will attempt to initiate physical contact by hugging or attempting to place jewelry on the victim. Afterwards the victim realizes their jewelry has been stolen.”

Police are urging residents to avoid physical contact with strangers and take note of any identifying details, such as physical descriptions and licence plates.
