The Guelph Police Service is putting out a warning about scammers pretending to work for telecommunications companies.
Police said they are investigating multiple reports from residents who were contacted by people who said they worked for Rogers or Bell. Residents have been targeted by phone and in-person.
The scammers said they were offering victims a discount or lower rates for services. Police were told the scammers used convincing stories to collect as much personal information as possible, and even offered to meet victims at their home to get more information or help them register for the purported services.
Once the phone call was over, victims discovered their legitimate Rogers or Bell account information had been changed and their personal information was compromised.
One suspect was described as a brown-skinned man in his 30s. He carried a notebook, was cleanly dressed and spoke with a slight East-Indian accent. He drove a white four-door sedan.
