Guelph man charged with alleged assault during theft

A Guelph man allegedly assaulted employee who tried stop a theft at a downtown business.

Guelph Police said the incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. Saturday.

The man was seen leaving the unnamed business with several alcoholic beverages he had taken from a bar area.

An employee then followed and attempted to intervene. Investigators were told the suspect threw a drink at them, striking the employee in the chest.

“As the victim picked up the can off the ground he was pushed from behind and punched twice in the head, breaking his glasses and causing a minor injury,” a media release said.

The 28-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning and charged with assault with a weapon, assault and mischief under $5,000.
