Approximately 100 metres of copper cable stolen in Guelph-Eramosa

Ontario Provincial Police are investigating the theft of copper cables from a wooded area along Highway 7 in Guelph-Eramosa Township.

They believe it happened Monday around 4 a.m.

The thief, or thieves, allegedly took approximately 100 metres of copper cable near Wellington Road 44 and Alma Street.

The estimated value is $5,000 to $10,000.

Police said some of the wires left behind had been concealed in bushes.

“These lines support critical services like 911 emergency access, medical alert systems, and internet and phone connectivity,” OPP warned in a media release. “When they’re compromised, entire communities can lose access to emergency help and essential communication, putting lives at risk and disrupting daily life.”

Anyone who notices suspicious activity around telecommunication lines is asked to call their local policing agency.
