Waterloo Region gives e-scooter pilot project a five-year extension

Waterloo Region residents took 170,000 rides on Neuron Mobility scooters and e-bikes since 2023. CTV’s Ashley Bacon finds out why staff hope to keep it going.

The Region of Waterloo has decided to extend its e-scooter and e-bike pilot project for another five years.

The agreement with Neuron Mobility will now continue until Nov. 27, 2029.

E-scooters and e-bikes were first introduced to the region in 2023, and the current contract was set to end in fall 2025.

According to the region, residents used the electric vehicles around 173,700 times and traveled 288,000 kilometres in 2024. They estimate it may have saved as much as 9.9 tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.

Not only has Neuron Mobility’s agreement been extended, but the pilot project will also be expanded.

The region said upright tricycles and handcycle tricycles, designed for those with a broader range of needs, will be introduced to the fleet later this year.

E-scooters and e-bikes are set to return to city streets in April.
