Two pedestrians killed in separate crashes over the weekend

Police say 14 people have died in collisions so far this year in Waterloo Region. CTV’s Colton Wiens has the warning for drivers.

Two pedestrians died in separate fatal crashes on roads in Waterloo Region over the weekend.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service said a 60-year-old woman from Cambridge was hit by the driver of a pickup truck in Cambridge late Friday night.

The woman was pronounced dead at the crash site, but the driver was not injured.

“The investigation is still in its infancy. We have a significant amount of follow up investigation to do,” Waterloo Regional Police Service Staff Sgt. Scott Griffiths said. “We’re looking for anybody who may have information regarding the collision, whether [it’s] video or witness information, is obviously very desired.”

The next day, a 66-year-old man from Wilmot was hit by a motorcyclist around 4:35 p.m. Police said the man had been walking on Wilmot Centre Road near Bleams Road.

The man was taken to hospital and later died, while the 34-year-old motorcyclist was not physically hurt.

In both incidents, the drivers stayed at the crash sites.

“Charges are always in consideration during the course of an investigation,” Staff Sgt. Griffiths said. “We’ll have to make a determination as the investigation moves forward.”

Police told CTV News the average number of fatalities by this time of year over the last five years has been 11. After this past weekend, there’s been a total of 13 fatal crashes on Region of Waterloo roads this year, which have resulted in the deaths of 14 people.

“It’s concerning when we have pedestrian crashes so close together,” Staff Sgt. Griffths said. “We have to try to determine where [the crashes] lie as far as causality.”

“I would say to all road users, because we have a multitude of different types of vehicles -pedestrians, cars, trucks, micromobility devices - we all share the same road, and we need to be all aware of each other and recognize what’s going on or your own surroundings,” he said.

Police are still investigating both fatal incidents and are asking any witnesses, or anyone with information regarding the collisions, to contact them.
